Unreasonable Hospitality, by Will Guidara

Reflections from Henry Ford

Some books stay with you long after you’ve finished them.

Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara is one of those books for me.

At first glance, it’s a book about restaurants—specifically the story of Eleven Madison Park and how its team transformed it into one of the most celebrated dining experiences in the world.

But what makes the book memorable isn’t the food. It’s the philosophy behind how the team chose to serve people.

Guidara describes a shift in thinking that changed everything for the restaurant. Instead of focusing only on delivering a technically perfect experience, the team began asking a different question:

How can we create moments people will never forget?

One story from the book captures that idea beautifully.

A couple had come into the restaurant to celebrate their anniversary. During the conversation, the team learned that earlier that day the couple had put a bottle of champagne in their freezer at home so it would be chilled when they returned that night.

But, of course, they had forgotten about it.

The sommelier quietly asked for their address, left the restaurant during service, went to their apartment, took the bottle out of the freezer before it could burst, and even left a dessert from the restaurant waiting for them when they returned home.

That moment had nothing to do with the menu or the wine list.

It had everything to do with paying attention.

Moments like that weren’t random acts of generosity. They were the result of a team that listened carefully, noticed the small details, and looked for ways to go one step further than what was expected.

What I appreciated most about the book is that those moments didn’t happen by accident. Behind the scenes, the restaurant had built strong systems, discipline, and alignment so the team could consistently deliver that kind of experience.

That combination—thoughtful systems paired with genuine care for people—is what makes the story so powerful.

Reading the book reinforced something I’ve come to believe over the years: in any profession that serves people, the technical work is only part of what matters.

The rest comes from the way you show up.

Unreasonable Hospitality is ultimately a book about service—about seeing people clearly and choosing to care in ways that feel meaningful.

It’s a perspective that shapes how we do things at Lifesteps Financial.
